When constructing art work, Crystal Ryan lets the material tell her what it wants her to create. Ryan dabbles with a new material every chance she gets and is always searching for more to explore. Ryan embraces unusual subject matter, the mundane, less comfortable and unpredictable. Ryan believes that beauty and the uncomfortable can coexist and she attempts to portray this in her artwork.
The juxtaposition of ugly and elegance in Ryan’s work is something she has begun to develop, hone and will continue to pursue. Ryan’s goal is evoking strong emotions from the viewer. Emotions are what ties viewers to a piece, and Ryan believes that the unexpected leaves a longer impression. The unexpected in Ryan’s pieces keeps the viewer curious and drawn in. Ryan’s work focuses on going past what is comfortable and leaving a lasting impression.
