Rachel Hiers is an artist who creates photographs, time-based media, electronics, projections, and installations. She works within landscapes, digitally capturing its uniqueness, manipulating organic forms and their surroundings. Her work reflects on time, nature, and self-reflection, particularly around grief. Driven by her personal experiences, she is continually exploring concepts of life and growth. Ultimately, she wants to shift perceptions of reality to create alternate views of our world.
In this current work, Rachel creates visual poetry using objects her mother left behind. She uses these items that embody the memory of her mother expressing the emotions of grief, nostalgia, and survival that Rachel encounters as she continues her life after loss. Rachel uses different words found on the sentimental objects as an important part of her process. The transcription of key words is a ritual to produce agency in a complex world.
